October Is A Month Of Contrasts— Charming Beauty and Delightful Spookiness

October is a month that wears two faces. On one side, it’s the golden glow of autumn—crunching leaves underfoot, apple orchards bursting with fruit, and cozy evenings with a warm blanket. On the other, it’s the spooky fun of Halloween—black cats, ghost stories, and the occasional scarecrow grinning from a front porch. It’s a month that invites us to slow down, soak in the colors of fall, and maybe sneak a piece of pie (more on that later).

Interesting Facts

  • Calendar History: October was originally the eighth month in the Roman calendar. Its name comes from “octo,” meaning eight. Then Julius and Augustus Caesar came along, demanded their own months, and suddenly October was tenth in line. (So yes, even the calendar has been rearranged by office politics!)
  • Birthstones: Opal and Tourmaline—both sparkling with color and mystery.
  • Birth Flowers: Marigold and Cosmos—bright blossoms that mirror October’s vibrant landscapes.
  • Zodiac Signs: Libras (diplomatic and charming) hold the reins until the 22nd, then Scorpios (intense and passionate) take over. No wonder so many October-born folks are unforgettable!

Folklore & Old Wives’ Tales

October

October has long been thought of as a month of omens and weather signs:

  • “When deer are in gray coat in October, expect a hard winter.” (Nature knows best—just check the deer’s wardrobe.)
  • Woolly bear caterpillars are the original “weathermen.” The wider their brown stripe, the milder the winter. Farmers still swear by it.
  • “Much rain in October, much wind in December.” So if your umbrella is getting a workout this month, hold onto your hat in December.

Holidays & Observances

  • Columbus Day / Indigenous Peoples’ Day (second Monday of October).
  • Halloween (October 31)—a night of tricks, treats, and sugar highs.
  • Oktoberfest—though it starts in late September, plenty of beer steins are still clinking in early October.
  • Breast Cancer Awareness Month—a time to honor survivors, remember loved ones, and raise awareness.
  • Fire Prevention Week—because “stop, drop, and roll” never goes out of style.

Famous Birthdays

October

October has given us no shortage of movers and shakers:

  • Julie Andrews (Oct. 1, 1935)
  • John Lennon (Oct.r 9, 1940)
  • Eleanor Roosevelt (Oct. 11, 1884)
  • Theodore Roosevelt (Oct. 27, 1858)
  • Pablo Picasso (Oct. 25, 1881)
  • Bill Gates (Oct. 28, 1955)

From presidents to painters, singers to innovators, it seems October produces folks who leave their mark. Maybe it’s the crisp fall air that sparks greatness.

Myths & Legends

October
  • The Harvest Moon, the full moon closest to the autumn equinox, was once believed to give farmers extra light to gather their crops. (It also gives werewolves extra excuses.)
  • Washington Irving’s Legend of Sleepy Hollow has been giving readers goosebumps since 1820, reminding us that not all October evenings are peaceful.
  • Black cats, witches, and pumpkins all add their flair to Halloween, each steeped in superstition and symbolism.

Fun Things to Do

  • Take a scenic drive and soak up the fall foliage.
  • Visit a pumpkin patch or corn maze (bonus points if you don’t get lost).
  • Bake something with apples or pumpkins—pies, crisps, or bread.
  • Tell a ghost story by the fire, just spooky enough to make the kids jump.

And speaking of apples and pies, here’s a funny story straight from my family cookbook…

A Salty Slice of Apple Pie

October

My cousin—God bless her—was known for baking the most delicious apple pies, especially for my husband Joe. He swore up and down they were the best pies he’d ever tasted. One Thanksgiving, she proudly presented Joe with a big, beautiful slice of her famous pie. He dug in, took a big bite… and suddenly his eyes went wide. Then, right there at the table, he spit it out!

My cousin gasped, “What’s wrong?”

Joe, trying to catch his breath, said, “Taste this.”

She took a bite and then burst out laughing. “Oh, my—I used salt instead of sugar!”

Well, that pie went straight to the trash, but the laughter stayed at the table all evening. Needless to say, Joe forgave her, and her pies regained their glory—though we never let her forget the Salty Apple Pie Incident of Thanksgiving.

Wrapping Up

October is a month of contrasts—beauty and spookiness, harvest and frost, sweet pies and salty surprises. It’s the season to savor life’s little moments, whether it’s watching the leaves change, laughing over family mishaps, or sipping something warm while the wind howls outside.

So grab your sweater, light a candle, and let This Amazing Funfilled Spooky Month work its magic. 🍁

Peak Leaf Peeping Season and Where To For the Best Color

If you live on the East Coast or Midwest, Leaf Peeping is a thing. I look forward to it every year. We have taken long drives just to look at the change of color and believe my some years it will take you breath away. The colors are so vibrant, so beautiful it just makes you wonder.

For example this picture of the fall color at Hocking Hills, Ohio. Just beautiful. Makes you want to stop and enjoy a cup of hot apple cider. Below I have included a list of the best times to enjoy the changing of colors this fall. I copied this from one of my favorite resources the Farmers Almanac. I am my Father’s daughter. Dad referred to this magazine for everything when I was growing up. You can get a copy here.

September The Gateway to Autumn

Where September Got Its Name

Believe it or not, “September” comes from the Latin word septem, meaning “seven.” Back in the ancient Roman calendar, September was the seventh month of the year. But once January and February were added, September got bumped to ninth place — yet the name never changed. (Talk about a serious case of “middle child” syndrome!) Even so, it has held onto its identity as a month of transition and preparation.

Like every month, September carries its fair share of folklore:

  • “Fair on September 1st, fair for the month.”
  • “September blow soft, till the fruits in the loft.”
  • “Heavy September rains bring drought.”

Farmers especially paid close attention to September weather patterns — after all, harvest time was right around the corner, and their winter depended on what came in from the fields. Even today, many of us still look for “signs of the season,” whether it’s geese flying south or that first pumpkin spice latte of the year.

September Holidays

Grandparent's Day
  • Labor Day – The first Monday in September honors workers everywhere. It’s also the unofficial end of summer — one last excuse for a cookout before the grills get tucked away.
  • Patriot Day (September 11) – A solemn day of remembrance for the lives lost and heroes made on 9/11.
  • Grandparents Day – Usually the first Sunday after Labor Day. A special day for hugs, stories, and spoiling the grandkids (as if we needed permission!).
  • Autumn Equinox – Around September 22–23, when day and night are nearly equal in length. From here, the nights slowly take the lead.

September’s Symbols

  • Birthstone: Sapphire — believed to protect from envy and harm while symbolizing wisdom and royalty.
  • Flower: Aster or Morning Glory — both symbolize love, wisdom, and faith.
  • Zodiac Signs: Virgo (until Sept 22) and Libra (Sept 23 onward).

Fun September Facts

Autumn Equinox
  • In the U.S., September is National Honey Month — the perfect excuse to drizzle it on biscuits, stir it into tea, or (in my house) spoon it straight from the jar.
  • It’s also National Sewing Month — so dust off that sewing machine, or at least find where you stashed the buttons that fell off back in June.
  • Football kicks into full swing in September — high school Friday nights, Saturday college rivalries, and of course, Sunday afternoons for the pros. (Bring snacks!)
  • Did you know September 13 is International Chocolate Day? A good excuse to grab a bar of your favorite and declare it “doctor’s orders.”

Family Adventures This Fall 🍎

This fall brings new adventures with one great-grandson playing soccer for the very first time. At three years old, he’s just getting the hang of the game — not quite sure if he should kick the ball, run with the ball, or politely let one of his teammates have the ball since they were there first. He has the best cheering section any little soccer star could ask for: Mom and Dad, Aunts and Uncles, Mimi, Bibi, PopPop, Papa, and of course Gigi. With all that encouragement and love, he’ll get the hang of it in no time!

Sports are also buzzing for the older kids. Our 7-year-old grandson, now in second grade, is juggling football and hockey. This is his very first year on the football team, and while I can’t say I’m entirely sure what position he plays (football playbooks are not my specialty), I’m certain he’s giving it his all and making us proud. His older brother, age nine, is also in the action with flag football, though we’re still waiting for his game schedule to arrive. Needless to say, September weekends are about to be filled with sideline snacks, cheers, and lots of proud family moments.

Although we are excited about all the family football gatherings to come this fall, one big part of our get togethers will be missing. Our son-in-law Bob. We lost him in January. He was the heart and sole of football for us. Friday night at the hometown football games Saturday at The Ohio State games and on Sundays at Justin’s barn for Bengal’s VS whoever.

Bob was always there to root the team on. His big booming voice will be missed this fall. I know he is looking down on all of us and I know he is proud of his kids. We all miss his so much. He was a big presence in our lives and left a big hole in our hearts. RIP Bob we all miss you!!

Closing Thoughts

For me, September has always felt like a reset button. Back-to-school shopping, new shoes that actually fit, fresh notebooks that smelled like possibility, and the excitement of a new routine. Even as adults, we can feel that “fresh start” energy in September. It’s like the universe gives us one more chance to get things on track before the holiday madness rolls in.

So whether you’re harvesting apples, watching football, or just soaking in those last warm evenings, September reminds us to pause, breathe, and prepare for the beauty of autumn.

🍁 Cheers to the month of change, balance, and fresh beginnings!
